The BOOT Party expresses deep outrage over the disgraceful incident in Abuja where military personnel, acting under the orders of a retired officer, obstructed officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from performing their lawful duties.
Although the conduct of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was nothing short of disgraceful. His approach has often crossed the line of acceptable behaviour, but this time, it hit a new low. Many couldn't even watch the video of the incident to the end — it was shameful, unbecoming of a public official. In any society that takes accountability seriously, such a display would have led to his resignation the very next day.
However, let it be said without ambiguity — this is not about the dramatis personae at the scene of the incident, but the larger question of military overreach in matters that are totally civil. What we witnessed was a direct assault on civil authority, an open insult to the Constitution, and a shameful reminder of the military arrogance our democracy was supposed to have buried decades ago.
It is appalling that in 2025, serving military personnel can be used by a retired officer to undermine a government ministry. Such conduct represents the height of indiscipline and lawlessness. The BOOT Party condemns it in the strongest possible terms.
The Nigerian military must remember that its allegiance is to the Constitution, not to any retired officer or private interest. Military orders end where civilian governance begins. To see armed men obstructing civil servants carrying out their lawful duties is not only unconstitutional — it is criminal.
This dangerous trend, if left unchecked, will erode public confidence in our democracy and embolden those who still nurse fantasies of military impunity. The government's silence on this matter is equally disturbing. Is this how the ruling party intends to govern — by allowing rogue military elements to intimidate civil authorities?
The BOOT Party demands an immediate and transparent investigation into this incident. The retired officer who issued this reckless directive must face the full weight of the law, and the military hierarchy must publicly discipline all personnel involved. Anything short of this will be seen as complicity.
Let it be clear: no uniform, no rank, and no political connection places anyone above the law. Nigeria belongs to the people — not to a clique of retired generals or political opportunists hiding behind military privilege.
Once again, the Nigerian military has cast itself in a negative public light — an image that could be interpreted by international observers, including strategic partners such as the United States, as evidence of harassment and abuse of power against civilians. Such perceptions risk undermining Nigeria's credibility and may be used as justification for withholding critical military assistance and equipment needed to combat terrorism effectively.
While the BOOT Party maintains that all public officials, including the FCT Minister, must act within the limits of due process, we refuse to accept a Nigeria where soldiers decide which parts of government can function. That is not democracy — that is dictatorship wearing camouflage.
Hence, the military aides of this retired chief should be permanently withdrawn. Such reckless use of assigned military assistants to officers that are despotic or oppressive portends grave danger to the civil society. Imagine, if that personality was not a Minister but an ordinary Nigeria, we can rest assured he would be in intensive care at the hospital after he or she must have been battered to stupor by these unhinged military boys.
The BOOT Party stands firmly with the rule of law, with civilian authority, and with every Nigerian who believes that no man, no matter how powerful, should be allowed to use the instruments of the state for personal battles.
Enough is enough. The era of impunity must end.
Yours sincerely,
