Fellow Nigerians,
On this Democracy Day, as we mark the restoration of our civilian rule — hard‐won through the sweat and toils of many Nigerians and especially on the blood of late Chief MKO Abiola; I write to you not with fanfare over high‐profile party switchers, but with sober reflection on the state of our nation—and a call to reclaim the promise of our democracy. Today, as President Bola Tinubu and his party trumpet a fresh wave of defections as proof of "Tinubuism," I see instead a dangerous turn toward what I have come to call "the democracy of clientelism."
A DEMOCRACY BOUGHT, NOT BUILT
Defections—the act of hopping from one party to another—have become all too common in our Fourth Republic. Rather than reflecting shifts in principle or policy, these moves are too often driven by personal ambition and the lure of government patronage. In the months since President Tinubu assumed office, we have witnessed worthy officeholders abandon years of public service in the PDP, the Labour Party, and other platforms—not to advance a coherent set of ideas or reforms, but to hitch their fortunes to the party in power.
Let us be clear: democracy is not a marketplace. It is not built on the transactional exchange of loyalty for jobs, contracts, or ministerial positions. Democracy is an enduring pact between the people and their representatives, founded on shared values and collective responsibility. When party loyalty can be bought and sold, our institutions weaken. Policy coherence falters. Accountability evaporates.
WHEN DEFECTIONS DISTRACT FROM OUR REAL CRISES
While headlines glow with the drama of political turncoats, millions of Nigerians still go to bed hungry. Over 16 million of our compatriots face acute food insecurity, and protests over rising prices of staples flare across our towns and cities. Insecurity—terrorism in the North‐East, banditry in the North‐West, militancy in the Niger Delta—continues to claim lives and destroy livelihoods. Yet instead of focusing on roadmaps to disarm these killers, rebuild communities, and secure farms and markets, the ruling party cavorts in banquet halls, celebrating each headline‐grabbing defection as a victory for "Tinubu's reform agenda."
This is not a reform agenda; it is a diversionary tactic. While we bicker over which governor has jumped ship, our fields lie fallow, our hospitals lack drugs, and our borders remain porous to arms and insurgents. Our democracy is hollowed out when its energy is channelled into the jockeying of political elites rather than into delivering real improvements in your daily lives.
A RENEWED OPPOSITION VISION
As leader of the BOOT Party—an opposition that believes in policies over personalities—I stand with you in demanding a different path. We must pivot the national conversation from who is switching parties to what is actually being delivered to our people:
1. SECURITY FOR EVERY CITIZEN
We will press for a truly community‐centered security strategy: upgrading our police force, funding local vigilante groups under clear civilian oversight, and pursuing economic and social interventions that undermine the appeal of insurgency and crime.
2. A THRIVING ECONOMY FOR ALL
Instead of tinkering with subsidies at the top while prices soar at the market stall, we will champion targeted social safety nets, revitalize small and medium enterprises, and boost food production through support for farmers and investment in rural infrastructure.
3. REAL ANTI‐CORRUPTION, NOT SELECTIVE WITCH‐HUNTS
Corruption remains a cancer on our republic. We will insist on empowering our investigative agencies with genuine independence, focusing not on political vendettas but on theft of public funds—wherever it occurs.
4. INCLUSIVE DIALOGUE AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Democracy prospers when you—the people—have a voice. We will convene town‐hall meetings in every ward, incorporate youth and women's groups into policy design, and publish clear, measurable performance scorecards for every elected official.
OUR CALL TO YOU ON DEMOCRACY DAY
Fellow Nigerians, democracy is more than the ballot box or the headlines. It lives in the markets where parents buy food, in the schools where children learn safely, and in the courts where justice is blind to wealth and influence. On this Democracy Day, I urge you to:
DEMAND PERFORMANCE, NOT PAGEANTRY: Insist that your representatives deliver on security, education, health, and jobs—regardless of the party letter behind their names.
SUPPORT IDEAS, NOT OPPORTUNISTS: Back parties and candidates who present clear, programmatic plans for your community—not those who chase ministerial appointments. Contribute your time, resources and money to development of political parties with ideology like the BOOT Party.
HOLD POWER TO ACCOUNT.: Attend civic forums, join citizen monitoring groups, and use every lawful means—social media, petitions, peaceful protests—to ensure your voice is heard.
CONCLUSION: RECLAIMING THE SOUL OF OUR REPUBLIC
"Tinubuism" seeks to redefine democracy as a system where loyalty is rewarded with office and policy debates are drowned out by defections. But we know better: democracy thrives on the clash of ideas, the steady service of public institutions, and the active engagement of every citizen.
This Democracy Day, let us reject the hollow spectacle of clientelism. Let us recommit to building a Nigeria where political allegiance is forged not in the corridors of power, but in the hearts of communities striving for peace, prosperity, and justice. The BOOT Party stands with you in that noble effort—and together, we will ensure that our democracy is not a game of musical chairs, but a living testament to the power of the people.
Happy Democracy Day, and may our collective resolve usher in a brighter tomorrow for all Nigerians.
Yours sincerely,
@SonnyAdenuga
