DEMOCRACY DAY MESSAGE: Democracy Must Deliver Security, Not Just Elections

My fellow Nigerians,
As we commemorate Democracy Day 2026, I extend warm greetings to every citizen at home and abroad. Today is a day to honour those who sacrificed for our democratic journey and to reflect honestly on whether our democracy is delivering the security, justice, prosperity, and dignity that Nigerians deserve.
Democracy is not merely the conduct of elections. It is the assurance that every child can sleep safely at night, every farmer can cultivate without fear, every entrepreneur can invest with confidence, and every citizen can move freely without the constant threat of kidnapping or violence.
Sadly, too many Nigerians continue to live under the shadow of insecurity. Families mourn loved ones, communities are displaced, businesses are disrupted, and even children are abducted by criminals who operate with alarming audacity. This situation demands not only courage but also a willingness to acknowledge when existing strategies are no longer producing the desired results.
The BOOT Party believes that true leadership requires the humility to reassess and adapt. After three years of the current administration, it is time for an honest conversation: the present security approach is not delivering the level of safety that Nigerians expect and deserve.
Our recommendation is straightforward. The nation's security architecture should be expanded beyond the traditional circle of military and security professionals. Government should deliberately include innovators, technologists, behavioural scientists, data analysts, risk experts, psychologists, community leaders, and other experienced professionals who bring fresh perspectives to complex problems.
History teaches us that organisations become stronger when assumptions are challenged. The Catholic tradition once appointed an advocatus diaboli—a devil's advocate—to critically examine evidence before sainthood could be granted. The objective was not opposition for its own sake but rigorous scrutiny that strengthened final decisions. Nigeria's security institutions should embrace the same culture of constructive challenge, where different viewpoints are encouraged rather than suppressed.
Equally important is the role of our communities. The BOOT Party proposes the establishment of Community Champions in vulnerable areas across Nigeria. These trusted individuals would serve as legitimate channels for reporting suspicious activities, emerging threats, and local intelligence through secure digital platforms.
Modern Artificial Intelligence systems can then analyse these reports alongside other available data to identify patterns, prioritise risks, and generate timely alerts for security agencies.
Technology should not replace human judgment but should enhance it by enabling faster analysis, better coordination, and more informed operational decisions. Such a model can strengthen early warning capabilities while ensuring that communities become active partners in protecting themselves.
However, security cannot be achieved through technology alone. It also requires justice, economic opportunity, quality education, transparent governance, and public trust. Citizens who believe in their institutions are more likely to cooperate with them, and institutions that earn trust become more effective in fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.
Democracy itself must continue to evolve. It must become more transparent, more accountable, more inclusive, and more responsive to the people it exists to serve. Political power should never become an end in itself but a means of improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
The BOOT Party remains committed to policies that combine innovation with accountability, technology with human dignity, and reform with practical implementation. We believe Nigeria possesses the talent, resilience, and determination to overcome its current challenges and build a nation where security and opportunity are available to all.
On this Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment not only to preserving democracy but to making it work for every Nigerian. Let us reject despair, embrace innovation, encourage honest debate, and insist on leadership that listens, learns, and acts.
Together, we can build One Working Nigeria.
