Today, our democracy has been dealt a painful blow. It is deeply ironic, and profoundly troubling, that one working day after Democracy Day, June 12, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the deregistration of five political parties.
The BOOT Party strongly condemns this ruling, which directs INEC to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
This judgment is a dangerous setback for democracy. Political parties are not ornaments in a republic; they are the nucleus of democracy - the lifeblood of participation, organisation, and electoral choice. To deregister parties that are preparing for elections is to weaken the democratic process itself.
We reject any attempt to use the judiciary as a tool to reduce political competition or silence alternative voices. A democracy cannot flourish when opposition platforms are treated as expendable or mocked simply because they stand outside the ruling establishment.
This ruling sends the wrong message to Nigerians and to the international community. The strength of any democracy is measured by how freely parties can organise, compete, and present ideas to the people. Deregistering parties at this critical moment undermines pluralism and injects unnecessary tension into the political space.
The BOOT Party therefore calls on all true defenders of democracy, civil society organisations, political stakeholders, and all lovers of justice to speak out against this anti-democratic act and defend the right of Nigerians to political association and participation.
Democracy is not built by exclusion. It is strengthened by fairness, competition, and full respect for the people's right to choose.
Yours sincerely,
